Australia defeats Sweden & secures a home tie!

The first round of Davis Cup Qualifiers have now been completed with Australia defeating Sweden 3-1 with wins in both of the first two singles rubbers and also in the all important doubles.

Our success in this tie has secured Australia a home tie against Belgium who defeated Chile 3 – 1.

This will be our first home tie since we played Hungary in Sydney in 2022.

The tie got off to a great start with Alex de Minaur prevailing in a tight and hard-fought first set against Mikael Ymer 7 – 5 and then winning the second set 6 – 1 to secure his 16th Davis Cup victory.

Aleksander Vukic
, who was making his debut in Davis Cup, then marked his first Davis Cup match by emphatically defeating Leo Borg 6-4, 6-4 in a very impressive and measured match.

Teaming up for the first time since their Olympics victory last year
and playing for only the second time together in Davis Cup, our doubles team of Matt Ebden and John Peers got day two underway.

They had a battle on their hands against Filip Bergevi and Andre Goransson, losing the first set in a tie-break before winning the next two hard-fought sets to take the rubber 6-7(7) 6-3, 6-2 and secure the tie for Australia.

Leo Borg then defeated John Peers 7-5, 6-4 in the reverse-singles dead rubber to give Australia a final tie result of 3-1 and ensuring we progress to the next round.

With the long-awaited return of home and away ties it was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic supporters at the tie, including a group of ADCTF members!
